Patient Quest for Grueby Tiles By Dave Smith, longtime THF member
In 1983, I traveled to St Louis to meet my future in-laws. I had always enjoyed antiquing and had recently gotten the bug to collect American art pottery. In one antique store on Cherokee Street, I was handling some antique tiles when the owner suggested that I look in the basement. Walking down, we found hundreds of new old stock tiles from circa 1900, Grueby, AETCO and Trent. The store owner said that they were rescued from the basement of an old hotel with the wrecking ball literally ready to do its work. There had been picture tiles but he had sold those. Over a period of a few years, I bought all the tiles as I could afford them, paying $5-6 per square foot of tile. . . . . . Paducah’s Finest Hotel
by Joseph A. Taylor
Located strategically in western Kentucky where the Tennessee River joins the Ohio, Paducah was also favored by the Illinois Central Railroad that established its repair shops there. By the turn of the 20th century, prosperity had begun to take hold with the city’s population approaching 20,000. Being the seat of McCracken County, Paducah experienced considerable growth during the 1920s, enough to inspire major local investments.

Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo Stands Tall in Long Beach, California
Dedication and patience are the keys to preservation, and our congratulatory salute is extended to Long Beach Heritage and the Port Authority of Long Beach whose negotiations achieved what appeared several years ago to be a pipe dream, namely the careful removal, tile by tile, of the magnificent, historically important mural that had adorned the Port Authority Administration Building for nearly 60 years. The building itself had been scheduled for imminent demolition.
Brian Worley Art & Restoration of Claremont, California tackled the job. Work commenced on September 26, 2018 with the careful marking of every tile, numbering each row and lettering each column consecutively, before the tiles were removed column by column.

Merola Tile, Sponsor of Monumental Mural, Holds Workshop!
On Friday, February 23, 2018, National Tile Day, the first of many Global Monumental Hand-Print Mural workshops was organized for the 90+ employees at Merola Tile in Manalapan, New Jersey. The full day event was organized by Katia McGuirk, mosaic artist, tile maker and THF board member who had this to report:
“The Merola Tile family is extraordinary! Diverse, kind, gracious, happy at work, loyal and eager to share their stories. All expressed and experienced the joy of creating! It was with joy in my heart that I touched and was touched by so many wonderful folks who loved their short/sweet conversation with clay. The Merola magic is real!”

Tile Heritage Returns!
There are few things at Tile Heritage that bring us greater pleasure than publishing a new issue of Tile Heritage: A Review of American Tile History. It’s been some time since we did so!
For many years Tile Heritage presented a tile symposium every year, from 1991 in Doylestown to 2005 in Minneapolis and Duluth. Among other things the symposiums fostered scholarship in the field of ceramic tile history. Year after year knowledgeable people were invited to present papers at these gatherings and to provide the Foundation with their work to publish, hence the origin and purpose of the Tile Heritage Review.

A Tribute to California Faience: A Triumph for Kirby Brown
On behalf of the board of directors of the Tile Heritage Foundation the 2015 Tile Heritage Award was presented to Dr. Kirby William Brown during a special luncheon at the Sainte Claire Hotel in San Jose, California last October. Those of us present celebrated Kirby’s historically important achievement: a tome on the California Faience Company accompanied by an exhibition at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento and currently at the Pasadena Museum of California Art, a thorough retrospective of the work of California Faience through April 3, 2016.

Tiling a San Francisco Hillside
by Richard Mohr
May 28, 2015 saw the dedication of this grand art tile installation on the stairs at the end of California Street beyond 32nd Avenue in San Francisco’s Outer Richmond district where the street crashes into Lincoln Park just below the Palace of the Legion of Honor. The installation was designed by Éire-born Aileen Barr, who also hand-crafted the installation’s decorated tiles and earlier had completed several other SF tiled staircases. The undecorated tiles are by Fireclay Tile Company and Heath Ceramics, both of San Francisco; Dal-Tile supplied the treads. All the tiles were installed up the staircase’s 52 thirty-foot-wide steps by Riley Doty and Phylece Snyder. The driving force behind the project, ten years in the making, was The Friends of Lincoln Park. The total cost of the project, including extensive restoration work to the original WWI-era concrete stairs, came to half-a-million dollars.
