Tile Heritage Mission
23/12/10 22:31 Filed in: Tile Heritage Mission

Tile Heritage involves more than the promotion and protection of tiles, murals and mosaics. The Foundation represents the need to preserve a perception of ourselves. From the time of the earliest cave paintings and molded clay forms, people have always sought to conceptualize themselves and inspire others through artistic endeavors. Safekeeping ceramic surfaces today is an integral part of preserving ourselves, a means of being remembered and understood by future generations.

When engaged in specific research, writing papers, preparing talks or just seeking general information, use the Tile Heritage library and research facility which has a growing collection of books, magazines, bulletins and catalogs, slides and photographs, and other materials related to ceramic surfaces. If you are trying to identify tiles from your home or collection or from specific installations, send photographs of the tiles along with a SASE or e-mail a low resolution JPEG file showing the overall installation and close-ups of any decorative tiles. We will do our best to identify them for you or forward the pictures to someone who can. Better yet, make use of the Tile Heritage slide library or the tile catalog collection as a resource. Grueby Arts And Crafts Masterpiece Rescued In Cleveland
TARPON, FLA. - A remarkable installation of nearly 1,200 matte-glazed Grueby tiles has been preserved in its entirety in Cleveland, Ohio. Thanks to the cooperative efforts of a private educational foundation based in Florida, the owners of a 1900 lakefront mansion and two well-known Arts and Crafts dealers on both coasts, all of the tiles were carefully removed from the floor, walls and ceiling of a small bathroom and will be conserved for future exhibition. Spanish Tiles in New York
18/10/10 15:44 Filed in: Special Features

Spain’s history with the YMCA dates back to 1929, when King Alfonso XIII of Spain donated the original artistic tilework, the year the Great Depression hit America and building screeched to a halt - to achieve the Moorish interiors architect Dwight James Baum wanted to create. And although this legacy was clearly a motivation to help with the tile restoration, without the one-woman catalyst who brought the project to Spain’s attention, it ís unlikely it would have come about. So this is also the account of one woman, Caridad Lopez, Spanish expatriate and West Side Y member, who made it her business to help restore what ís considered to be an architectural masterpiece ñ the 63rd Street YMCA. Her reason, this place reminds her of home. READ MORE ....
