Drawing inspiration from the bright stars and nocturnal life of the idyllic mountain town of Julian, California, artist Betsy K. Schulz seamlessly weaves together elements of native flora and fauna.
Featured in the ceramic mural at the Julian County Library are incense cedar, field horsetail, mountain lion, sphinx moth, Townsend’s big-eared bat, great horned owl, raccoon, spring daffodils, and an apple tree ready for harvest. Each element carries symbolic significance, embodying strength, beauty, transformation, adaptability, wisdom, harmony, and heritage. A thick pine frame creates the illusion of peering through a window into the moonlit forest. The varied textures create a visually stunning sculptural experience. “Under Dark Skies” encourages both locals and visitors to contemplate the beauty and celestial wonders that illuminate the night sky. Julian is a designated International Dark Sky Community, and is committed to preserving and protecting the natural nighttime environment from light pollution. That’s worth celebrating!
