THF: Tile of the Month ~ January 2006

Heath Ceramics
Sausalito, California

The late Edith Heath founded Heath Ceramics in the mid-forties when, following her one-woman show at San Francisco's Palace of the Legion of Honor, her pieces were picked up for sale at Gumps of San Francisco. For the past half-century, Edith's life was dedicated to the craft of ceramics as one distinctly tied to the skill of the artisan. This passion, along with the legacy of her work in stoneware body and glaze development, gives Heath its unique place in ceramics today.

Since Edith Heath became the first non-architect to win the prestigious AIA Gold Medal Award for the exterior tile on Pasadena's Norton Simon Museum in 1971, Heath tile has been known for its high quality and design leading aesthetics. Heath tile stands out for the handcrafted feel of its glazes that contrasts with the crisp modern lines of its shapes.

The tile is made from high-fire stoneware bases developed over 50 years to be an extremely durable, versatile and beautiful surfacing material suitable for use in interiors, exteriors, floors, walls, counters, showers, pools and fountains. One of Heath tile's special qualities is the natural variation in color that comes from the hand- application of glazes.

Heath Ceramics is one of the few remaining mid-century American potteries, having made tableware and tile for over a half-century using the same original methods. This heritage of craftsmanship gives the products their unique look and quality.
