Motawi Tileworks
Motawi Tileworks was founded in 1992 by Karim and Nawal Motawi,
brother and sister, both graduates of the University of Michigan. Now
a "clean, well-lighted (12,600 sq. ft.) place," the operation had its
origins in a two-car garage adjacent to Nawal's home where the first
tiles, Celtic in design and clearly inspired by historic
predecessors, were produced in a most rudimentary, hand-made fashion.
Nawal, who learned the basics at historic Pewabic Pottery in Detroit,
serves as the company's artistic guide, while Karim oversees
production that now occupies roughly 20 employees. Both design Motawi
tiles that today involve hundreds of options.
